Now that Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+, Prime Video and Apple TV+ have given rise to a multi-billion-dollar video streaming industry, the time seems ripe for a new Apple TV.

The current (5th generation) Apple TV 4K box was unveiled way back in 2017, so it’s due a revamp. Sure, it’s still a great option for those who want to stream content from Apple TV+ and Netflix in 4K HDR, but it’s starting to look a little dated and is stuck with Apple’s ageing A10 processor.

Cue the rumoured (6th gen) Apple TV box, said to boast the same speedy Apple A14 Bionic chip as the iPhone 12. So, will the new Apple TV double as a games console? Will the set-top “box” be relaunched as a sleek, Fire TV-style streaming stick?

Join us as we cast a critical eye over some of the more reliable Apple TV rumours.

New Apple TV release date

Good news: the new Apple TV is tipped to land in March 2021. Noted Apple tipster Jon Prosser and famed Chinese leaker “Kang” are both convinced that the new Apple TV will break cover on Tuesday 23rd March, to be precise.

Rumour has it the Apple event will be held virtually on the company’s website and YouTube channel. The new Apple TV could launch alongside the new iPad Pro, AirPods 3 and AirTags – though Apple hasn’t confirmed any of this, naturally.

Apple typically holds events on a Tuesday and while the 16th and the 30th March have also been touted as possible launch dates, the fact that two of the most reliable Apple leakers have settled on the 23rd March speaks volumes if you ask us.

The event is also expected to feature the grand unveiling of Apple’s iOS 14.5 operating system, complete with new Siri features and the option to unlock your iPhone using your Apple Watch when wearing a face mask. If that pans out as we think it will, the Apple TV could also boast new Siri functionality (more on that below).

Lastly, some tech fans have said that Apple won’t schedule the event for 23rd March because it would clash with the launch of the OnePlus 9 smartphone. Would Apple really lose sleep over the arrival of a mid-market Android…
