The next generation of Apple TV is finally here, and hey, look at that: games are a thing there now.
The app-centric framework for Apple TV and its gesture-managed remote control bring mobile-style gameplay to the device — and, in some cases, even more than that. It might not be a console competitor yet, but Apple TV at least helps the company contend with the growing Android TV presence in living rooms.
We’ve still got a lot of questions about the particulars — for example, are MFi controllers supported for console-style games? — but there’s some nifty potential here, especially with the games Apple has confirmed so far.
Crossy Road
We’ve already covered what makes the Apple TV-ified take on Hipster Whale’s Crossy Road special, but here’s the important stuff: The big-screen version of the game adds couch-based multiplayer, so you and a friend can hop across busy roads and rivers either cooperatively or as competitors.
Crossy Road is like an endless, runner-themed take on Frogger, and it’s been a wildly popular hit on mobile devices. It should be fun to swipe and tap your way through its escalating challenges on a larger screen.
Beat Sports
Another one that you can take a closer look at right here. Beat Sports is a collection of sports-themed rhythm games from Harmonix, the studio behind the Rock Band series. Think Wii Sports, except it’s touch-based and there’s a musical element.
Harmonix only showed off a rhythmic home run derby during the Apple event, but the collection also includes musical takes on volleyball, golf and tennis.
Disney Infinity 3.0
Here’s a game that just came out on virtually every current-generation machine that plays games, plus some older ones. So of course it’s coming to Apple TV as well.
Disney Infinity 3.0 is the latest in a growing lineup of video games that connect with physical toys. It’s also the first in Disney’s series to rope in characters and stories from the Star Wars universe. Disney says this release mirrors the console experience, using a special Bluetooth game portal and MFi controller. Beyond that: more Star Wars is always a good thing.
Guitar Hero Live
The next evolution of the Guitar Hero series arrives in fall 2015, and now it’s adding Apple TV to a long list of supported devices. Guitar Hero Live skips video game animations in favor of live-action, first-person video that dynamically branches into excited or angry crowd scenes, depending on how well you play.
Also included is the new GHTV mode, which gives fans new ways to enjoy a regular flow of add-on songs for the game. There’s a big social focus here, with competitions and community events built around playing freshly-added songs during the limited times that they’re available.
