If you’ve been holding off on theApple TV 2 4.4.4 updatefor an untethered jailbreak, you can now update the device without worry. A new version of Seas0npass has been released to to untether the Apple TV’s unique iOS 4.4.4 build, the tool remains extremely easy to use and supports most of the 3rd party plugins, including last.fm, XBMC, RSS feeds, and more.

As you may have guessed, the latest version of Seasonpass uses the same untether from the newest redsn0w iOS 5.0.1 jailbreaks.

Despite many similarities, Apple continues to not label the Apple TV 2 build as iOS 5 for the device, and continues to release builds as version 4. Apple TV OS v 4.4 brought a variety of new features to the device, but most notable are AirPlay mirroring (fun with the iPhone) and the addition of several live video feeds and trailers, along with bug fixes.

Using Seas0nPass to Jailbreak Apple TV 4.4.4 Untethered

Before proceeding, update the Apple TV 2 to the latest 4.4.4 build, update iTunes, and download the appropriate Seas0npass version from above. You’ll also need the aluminum Apple TV remote and a microUSB cable to connect the Apple TV to the computer to perform the jailbreak.

• Launch Seas0npass and click the “Create IPSW” button
• Allow the custom IPSW to build and then connect the Apple TV to the computer via the USB cable, leaving the power cable disconnected
• Wait for the front light on the Apple TV to flash rapidly, then point the AppleTV remote at the device, following the onscreen instructions to place the ATV into DFU mode (hold both the MENU and PLAY/PAUSE buttons for 7 seconds)
• iTunes will now launch and begin restoring the Apple TV 2 to the custom jailbroken IPSW, the restore will be confirmed and the ATV2 is now jailbroken
• Verify the Apple TV 2 is jailbroken by looking for the red “FC” logo in the lower right corner of the screen, shown in the screenshot below

I have 2 apple tv’s 2 jailbroken and I’m going to sell one on ebay and just get an Apple TV 3. I sold my apple tv 3 on ebay a few weeks back, and i miss the clearer picture that my apple tv gave me.I rather have the 1080 P streaming. I could use xbmc on my Mac mini to.plus I have over 300 hd movies on my external hard drive for my itunes streaming.

Apple TV Plus is now firmly in the second half of its first year in the streaming service market, and it’s tough to figure out how it’s doing. Despite Apple’s investment in big, expensive programming with massive stars like The Morning Show, the platform doesn’t compare to the likes of Netflix and Hulu right now. Clearly, though, Apple is prepared for the long haul, with loads planned for 2020 and beyond, including its expensive-looking adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation. 

The busy flow of Apple TV Plus shows hasn’t ceased in 2020, either, with this year bringing the likes of Chris Evans drama Defending Jacob, and videogame-themed Mythic Quest from the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-creators. The future of movies on the platform is exciting, too: Apple is backing a $150 million+ movie from Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, according to reports. 

At WWDC 2020, Apple confirmed the Apple TV app was coming to Sony and Vizio TVs this summer, too, allowing more people to access its content. Greyhound, starring Tom Hanks, is the latest big release on the service.

Apple TV Plus has plenty shows and movies coming up, a lot of them featuring big-name stars. Take the Scorsese-directed Killers of the Flower Moon, for instance, a ‘large-scale Western’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro.

In terms of upcoming shows that are worth knowing about, here are a few highlights. The Shrink Next Door is based on the 2019 podcast of the same name, and it’ll star Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd. Foundation is a sci-fi series based on the books by Isaac Asimov, and starring Chernobyl’s Jared Harris and Lee Pace. Severance, directed and produced by Ben Stiller, is a dark workplace thriller featuring Adam Scott from Parks and Recreation.

Play classic arcade games right on your Apple TV.

Want to play your Mega Man 2 ROM on your new fourth-generation Apple TV? How about Super Mario Bros. 3?

It’s a ton of fun to play classic console arcade games, especially if you have a few ROMs lying around on your hard drive and would like to play them on the big screen.

Here’s how to get your new Apple TV all set up to rock some retro games.

First of all, you’ll need a fourth-generation Apple TV running the latest version of tvOS, an active Apple Developer Account (free or otherwise), a copy of XCode for your Mac and a USB-A to USB-C cable (I grabbed this one from Amazon).

You’ll also need emulation software to run on your Apple TV. Provenance is the one I used; it’s one of the nicer ones and it will run on your Apple TV as well as your iOS devices. It’s super-easy to use and only takes a bit of work to compile the code.

Use the USB-C cable to connect your Apple TV to your Mac; this will let your Mac and the Apple TV communicate and add the compiled software emulator to your Apple TV.

Set up Xcode

Grab a copy of Xcode to build the emulator.

Next, set up Xcode. Launch it on your Mac and you’ll be prompted to enter your Apple ID. If you don’t get the prompt, simply head into Preferences in Xcode and enter your ID and password there.

Once your Apple ID is verified, head to the Provenance code repository at GitHub and copy the source URL from the top of the file list. Next, choose Check Out from the Source Control menu in Xcode. Paste the source URL you just copied into the repository location field that shows up. Click on the Next button in the lower right corner of the Xcode screen.

Choose the master branch and click on the blue Next button. Save the folder named Provenance somewhere where you can find it later, like your Downloads or Desktop folder.

Once the source code is downloaded, you’ll get a new Provenance window. If your Apple TV is connected to your Mac via USB, turn it on. Provenance will prompt you to add the device to your Xcode install. Choose it, click Next, and let Xcode do its thing.

The new Apple TV box 2020 is thought to be arriving this year but we’re still awaiting confirmation as the box didn’t make an appearance at WWDC.

The most recent Apple TV box brought 4K and HDR support into people’s homes. Over the past few months, there’s been speculation that Apple is set to release a refresh of the streaming box with a faster chipset alongside the tvOS 14 update.

At WWDC we received more details of tvOS 14, but the new Apple TV box goes on sale. With the tvOS update set to launch in the autumn, perhaps that’ll be the time we see the new streaming player.

Here’s what we know about the new Apple TV box.

When will the new Apple TV 2020 be released?

The Apple TV box tends to be updated in the autumn every two years or so. The Apple TV 4K was launched in September 2017, and the previous – Apple TV HD – was launched October 2015.

YouTuber Jon Prosser tweeted that a new Apple TV 4K with the codename Neptune T1125 is ready to ship.

WWDC came and went without a mention of a new Apple streaming player. In our view this likely means that if the player is indeed ready to ship, we could see it launch later in 2020 when the tvOS 14 update is released.

How much will the new Apple TV 2020 cost?

Currently, the Apple TV 4K is £179 for the 32GB version or £199 for the 64GB version. The fourth generation Apple TV HD is available for £149. With a 64GB and 128GB version in the works, it could be more expensive or they could replace the 32GB/64GB versions.

Since the Apple TV 4K, the market has been flooded with cheaper alternatives from Amazon, Google and Roku. It wouldn’t make much sense if Apple priced their streaming box much higher than its rivals. We’d hope it’s cheaper, but it’ll likely be priced the same.

What does the new Apple TV 2020 look like?

Out of all the current rumours and speculation about a new Apple TV box, one thing has been consistent – the physical design will be unchanged.

Follow ups to Prosser’s tweet (above) indicated that the image he obtained of the unit “looks like an Apple TV”. Well, that’s insightful…

That’s not to say it couldn’t use an update in other areas. The current box has a single HDMI 2.0 output. A move to HDMI 2.1 would support eARC so it could passthrough Atmos to an audio device. The Apple TV 4K supports Bluetooth 5, but this is only for set-up and connection to other Apple devices.

According to 9to5mac, a new remote is in the works. The current Siri voice remote is not much loved and not ideal for gaming, which is especially important as Apple has pushed forward with its gaming ambitions in its Arcade platform.
