Apple is pushing its way into the streaming TV market and that means debuting apps on other platforms. This week, the Apple TV app has made its way over to Android TV, at least on select Sony Bravia models.

Our colleagues at 9to5Mac were first tipped off to the debut of the Apple TV app arriving on some Sony TV models in Brazil through a recent firmware update. It’s not a widespread rollout by any means, but it’s certainly encouraging to see the rollout starting.

Since all of Sony’s smart TVs are running on Google’s Android TV platform, this also marks the first time the Apple TV app has been available on Android devices. We don’t expect Apple to release this app for Android smartphones anytime soon, though, and its availability on Android TV will likely be locked down to Sony devices only. Notably, in a conversation with Nvidia recently, it sounded like there were no concrete plans to bring Apple TV to the Shield at this time.

The Apple TV app for Sony Android TVs allows users to watch TV shows and movies they’ve purchased from iTunes as well as accessing the new Apple TV+ streaming service when it debuts in early November. The same app recently debuted for Amazon Fire TV and Roku as well.

What is Apple TV and do I need an iPhone to use it?

You’re a brave soul, @Wmui1. Right now, a bunch of Apple fanboys are camping out in front of an Apple Store somewhere, already waiting for the Apple Watch, reading this post on their iDevices and snickering at your question.

Ignore them, I say! Your question isn’t silly. Even the tech media is seemingly confused by Apple TV sometimes — does “Apple TV” refer to the hardware that exists today, the cable-killing video service that Apple is trying to create or a theoretical Apple-branded television set?

Short answer: Apple TV is not a TV.

Apple TV is a $69, palm-sized black plastic box that connects to your television set via an HDMI cable. Then it connects to your home wireless network and brings the magic of Internet video to your TV. It comes with a simple three-button remote.

It was initially described as a “hobby” for Apple. Which, in retrospect, is sort of like Apple saying, “Hey man, I’m just shooting hoops in the backyard,” when actually it’s gunning for a spot in the NBA. Since the product’s launch in 2007, Apple has sold 25 million of these little boxes.

Let me back up a bit first. There are “dumb” TVs, and there are “smart” TVs. Smart TVs can connect to the Internet and run Web apps somewhere within the interface of the television set — click around with the remote, and you can find things like Netflix, YouTube and Facebook. “Dumb” TVs don’t.

A box like Apple TV — also known as a set-top box — bridges the gap. You connect Apple TV to your TV via HDMI, switch inputs to Apple TV and voila, you are accessing Web video apps on your nice big TV screen.

The funny thing is, even some people with smart TVs still use Apple TV. This might be because they’ve canceled their cable subscription and use Apple TV to access video content on their TV, or because the Apple TV interface is just so much easier to navigate. (I am in the latter camp.)

You asked whether you need an iPhone to use Apple TV. You do not — but you do need an iTunes account, which you’ll use to sign up, log in and buy stuff like TV shows and movies off of Apple TV.

So what exactly can you watch on it? Apple TV has more than 50 “channels,” streaming stuff from Netflix, YouTube, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, MLB.tv, ESPN, Disney, ABC News, CNBC and more. There’s a full list here. That doesn’t mean you get all of the same content…

Streaming Steam games on Apple TV? Yes please.

If you’re hoping to stream games from Steam to your new Apple TV, developer Kevin Smith (no, not the Clerks guy) has shown it is possible by modifying the Moonlight iOS project — which lets users stream Steam games from a desktop computer to their iOS device — so that it works with tvOS.

For those unfamiliar with it, Moonlight is an open-source implementation of NVIDIA’s GameStream, built for iOS. Smith connected Moonlight to his PC, which was running NVidia 970 (Sli), and then streamed the game via wired ethernet.

“So I thought I have a go at getting it up and running on tvOS,” he notes. “This is a very very quick and very dirty compilation of the code to tvOS and with complete disregard of the __TVOS_UNAVAILABLE restrictions (So no AppStore version unfortunately).”

Following months of build-up and anticipation, Apple’s streaming video service finally launched on Friday. There are eight shows and a documentary available on Apple TV+ as of Friday morning, and if you want to check them out, you can sign up for a seven-day free trial on Apple’s website right now. But that promo pales in comparison to the one that any customer is eligible for who bought a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV, or Mac after September 10th. As Apple announced in September, these customers will receive a full year of Apple TV+ for free.

We knew virtually everything there was to know about the service ahead of its launch (although Apple took its sweet time doling out all of the relevant details), but now that Apple TV+ has officially launched, we have also gotten a look at the terms and conditions, which you’re going to want to read before you start your free trial:

• Offer is available for a limited time only.
• Offer cannot be combined with other free trials or offers for Apple TV+. Only one offer per Family, regardless of number of devices purchased. You can share your 1 year free Apple TV+ with up to 5 other family members via Family Sharing.
• Redeem your 1 year free in the Apple TV app starting November 1, 2019. Make sure your eligible device is running the latest iOS, iPadOS, tvOS, or macOS.
• Offer must be claimed in the Apple TV app within 3 months after first setting up your new device. To see the offer appear, you will need to sign in with your Apple ID on your new device. If you’ve purchased your new device before the launch of Apple TV+ on November 1, you will have 3 months starting November 1 to redeem.
• Upon claiming the offer, you commit to a $4.99/month subscription that starts immediately after the 1 year free and automatically renews until cancelled. You can cancel at any time in Settings at least a day before each renewal date. If you cancel during your free year, you and your family members will immediately lose access to Apple TV+ and the remainder of your 1-year free trial. You can’t reactivate this trial.

The most important condition, and one that’s going to necessitate setting a reminder, is the cancellation policy. As soon as you cancel your free trial (providing you decide Apple TV+ isn’t worth $5 per month), you and anyone else on your Family Sharing plan will lose access to the service. This has become the norm for Apple recently, despite the fact that countless other services, including Amazon Prime, ESPN+, Spotify, PlayStation Plus, and Xbox Live all allow you to cancel your trial at any time and retain access until the trial’s original end date.

What is Apple Arcade?

Before we discuss what Apple Arcade is, it’s important to clarify what it isn’t. It is not a game-streaming service like the upcoming Project xCloud or Google Stadia, which means a stable internet connection isn’t required to enjoy your favorite downloaded titles. Of course, some kind of data plan or internet connection will be necessary to access Apple Arcade and download the games. Apple assures, however, that once the game is installed, you’ll be able to enjoy it offline at any time, sans a few titles when played on the Apple TV.

Apple Arcade is a monthly subscription service that gives its members unlimited access to a wide variety of games, all of which will receive free updates and content automatically. The service will be available across iPhone, iPad, Mac, as well as Apple TV, and the games included support cross-save. This means games you start on your Mac at home can be continued on your phone or tablet via the cloud.

Apple Arcade games will feature no ads, and there will be no microtransactions in any of them. A subscription to the service will give you access to the service along with up to five other people, and new games are promised to be added “all the time.”

Features

Apple Arcade will support parental controls, so younger players can enjoy the age-appropriate games included in the program without accessing more mature titles. To find games for downloading, you will be able to use a new Apple Arcade icon located in the App Store itself, which will make finding the latest titles a breeze.

None of the games included on Apple Arcade will be available on the Google Play store, and Apple is reportedly paying quite the price to make this happen. According to the Financial Times, the company budgeted more than $500 million solely for securing games. Developers will reportedly receive a percentage of the program’s revenue based on the amount of time users spend playing their games.

Apple Arcade is being designed specifically for Apple devices, but certain games will still support physical controllers. Competition is heating up between established “media Goliaths” who want customers for their existing products and companies like Netflix NFLX, -1.75% whose main business is streaming, said Jim Willcox, the senior electronics editor at Consumer Reports.

“It’s sort of like a perfect storm of companies that are really looking to tie you to their services, melding with companies that have new services they want you to try,” Willcox told MarketWatch.
