I have an Apple TV 3 Rev A and I was trying to jailbreak it using this tutorial https://clickytv.com/apple-tv-3-jailbreak-2020/. Some people may have their Apple TV set up in a room where the TV in question isn’t attached to an aerial or satellite dish, in which case they may be looking for a way to watch and maybe record live TV.

It is possible to watch live TV on the Apple TV, although in our experience the quality isn’t as good.

There are a few apps you can use.

On the newer Apple TV models you can download an app called TVPlayer from the App Store. This app offers a TV schedule that makes it easy to select the channel and programme you wish to watch. It also offers an OnDemand service – but note: this is not UK channels, and it is a premium service that you will have to pay extra for.

However, it’s no Freeview swap-in. The channel line-up includes BBC 1, 2 and 4, as well as Channels 4 and 5 but there’s hardly any of the extra channels offered – no ITV 2 or ITV 3, for example. Notably, you don’t even get the same range of channels as you do by streaming live TV for free at the TV Player website or on the TV Player iPhone/iPad app, where the selection more closely mirrors Freeview. We’re guessing this is because of licensing issues, something that comes with the postscript that this situation is likely to change.

Some top-name premium channels are available via the TV Viewer app, such as History, Discovery and Cartoon Network, although to access them you’ll need to pay £4.99 a month. This will also unlock the Catch-up feature, although this is limited to a handful of the aforementioned premium channels and doesn’t feature the likes of BBC or ITV programmes.

Alas, even if you pay-up, you’ll find all the channels are streamed in standard definition (SD). In other words, they look slightly fuzzy on HD tellies that are the norm in most living rooms nowadays (although some tellies cope better with the lack of definition than others). This is true of the live streams as well as catch-up. Incidentally, it’s streaming-only within the app, and there’s no option to download content, which can help avoid buffering if you’ve a slow net connection.

How to watch live TV with the TVPlayer app

To watch live TV using the TVPlayer app on the Apple TV follow these steps:

1. Download and open the TVPlayer app on your Apple TV.
2. Along the top of the interface you will see the following options: Live TV, Catchup, Channels, Guide, Account. Scroll over to Live TV.
3. Scroll through the list of UK channels to pick the one you want to watch.
4. If you want to consult the guide first, scroll across to Guide and select that.
5. Find the programme you wish to watch (you can’t select something in the future or past).

With the 2020 Apple TV featuring a powerful chipset like the A12X Bionic, a user simply cannot rely on the regular remote to do some casual gaming, which could be one reason why Jioriku tweeted that a game controller is being prepped. Sadly, while the tipster earlier stated that the TV box will ship with a heatsink to properly cool the A12X Bionic in an earlier tweet, he doesn’t have a concrete release date for this unnamed game controller.

He does state there’s a possibility the announcement might happen at WWDC 2020, which will start on June 22, but you shouldn’t hold your breath. Then again, there could be some hardware announcements happening on a software-focused keynote such as the 2020 iMac redesign and Apple’s transition from Intel chips to its in-house A-series silicon, so anything is possible a few days from now.

Want to play your Mega Man 2 ROM on your new fourth-generation Apple TV? How about Super Mario Bros. 3?

It’s a ton of fun to play classic console arcade games, especially if you have a few ROMs lying around on your hard drive and would like to play them on the big screen.

Here’s how to get your new Apple TV all set up to rock some retro games.

First of all, you’ll need a fourth-generation Apple TV running the latest version of tvOS, an active Apple Developer Account (free or otherwise), a copy of XCode for your Mac and a USB-A to USB-C cable (I grabbed this one from Amazon).

You’ll also need emulation software to run on your Apple TV. Provenance is the one I used; it’s one of the nicer ones and it will run on your Apple TV as well as your iOS devices. It’s super-easy to use and only takes a bit of work to compile the code.

Use the USB-C cable to connect your Apple TV to your Mac; this will let your Mac and the Apple TV communicate and add the compiled software emulator to your Apple TV.

Set up Xcode

Grab a copy of Xcode to build the emulator.

Next, set up Xcode. Launch it on your Mac and you’ll be prompted to enter your Apple ID. If you don’t get the prompt, simply head into Preferences in Xcode and enter your ID and password there.

Once your Apple ID is verified, head to the Provenance code repository at GitHub and copy the source URL from the top of the file list. Next, choose Check Out from the Source Control menu in Xcode. Paste the source URL you just copied into the repository location field that shows up. Click on the Next button in the lower right corner of the Xcode screen.

Choose the master branch and click on the blue Next button. Save the folder named Provenance somewhere where you can find it later, like your Downloads or Desktop folder.

Once the source code is downloaded, you’ll get a new Provenance window. If your Apple TV is connected to your Mac via USB, turn it on. Provenance will prompt you to add the device to your Xcode install. Choose it, click Next, and let Xcode do its thing.

Apple’s streaming video service, Apple TV+ is set to launch in Canada on November 1, 2019, at the price of $5.99 CAD per month. You can start streaming right away via the TV app on your iOS devices, Apple TV or Mac or via tv.apple.com.

If you want to get one year of Apple TV+ for free, all you have to do is “purchase any new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, Mac or iPod touch starting September 10,” and you’ll get one year of the service included, a $71.88 CAD value.

Apple says starting November 1, “customers can initiate the one-year free offer in the Apple TV app on the device running the latest software.” Customers will have three months after their device activation to claim the free Apple TV+ offer, or three months starting November 1 if their purchase was made before the launch of the service.

Your Apple TV+ subscription will renew automatically after one year, at $5.99 CAD per month. Apple says customers can cancel their subscription at any time within Settings “at least one day before each renewal date.” If you cancel during the free period, the remainder of the subscription will be forfeited.

Apple says this offer applies to both new and refurbished models. With an Apple TV+ subscription, up to six family members can share the service and watch with their own Apple ID and password.

“Only one one-year offer is available per family, regardless of the number of devices purchased,” explains Apple.

Apple TV+ will offer a 7-day free trial starting November 1 on the following devices running iOS 12.3 or later, tvOS 12.3 or later and macOS Catalina:

If you’re buying a new Apple product this fall, one year of complimentary Apple TV sounds like a nice perk, but the service definitely will have a limited library at launch compared to Netflix and Disney+, which is coming soon.
